Assignment EDU 03
Computer- mediated Communication (CMC) in Education
Computer- mediated communication (CMC) is a process in which human data interaction occurs through one or more networked telecommunication systems. A CMC interaction occurs through various types of networking technology and software, including email, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), instant messaging (IM), Usenet and mailing list servers. Computer -mediated communication is any form of communication between two or more individual people who interact and/ or influence each other via separate computers through the internet or a network connection - using social software. CMC doesnot include the methods by which two computers communicate, but rather how people communicate via computers.
Computer - mediated communication (CMC) has also been defined as "any communication patterns mediated through the computer". CMC technology saves time and money in IT organizations by facilitating the use of all communication formats. CMC can include any means by which individuals and groups use internet to talk to each other.
Computer-mediated communication is divided into synchronous and asynchronous modes.
Synchronous communication
The exchange of information in real time is known as synchronous communication. It means learners are communicating at the same time. It helps e-learners to feel like participants. Here, all participants are online simultaneously. Synchronous communication can be in text, audio or in video form.
The main features of synchronous communication are:
1) collaboration
2) immediate response
3) 1 to 1 communication
4) Allow body language
The most well known synchronous applications are:
1) Instant messaging : It is the exchange of text messages through a software application in real-time.
2) Skype : It is the most famous application of synchronic communication because it requires users to be online at the same time. However this system has some requirements.
3) Video Conferencing : It is a real time video and audio communication between people in different locations.
4) Internet Relay Chat (IRC) : It is an Internet system which allows users to chat live (in real time) using text or audio Internet telephony, a way of using the internet as an alternative to the main telephone network.
and many more.
Asynchronous Communication
Asynchronous communication means that people are communicating at different time. In this type of CMC messages are posted up at any time, and read and responded to by other users also at times which suit them. In other words, users do not have to be online at the same time as they do with synchronous exchanges. Like synchronous, it can be in text, audio or in video form.
The main features of asynchronous communication are :
1) Available anytime
2) Available anyplace
3) Variety of media
4) Multiple perspective
5) One to one or one to many communication
The most famous asynchronous applications are:
1) Email
2) Facebook
3) YouTube
4) Newsgroups
5) Texting and many more.
